When it comes to fire door inspections, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 made it a legal requirement from 23 January 2023 for those responsible for all multi-occupied residential buildings in England with storeys over 11 metres in height to do the following:
- Have quarterly checks of all the fire doors in your building, including self-closing devices.
- Ensure you have annual checks of all flat entrance doors leading onto a building’s common parts. ‘Common parts’ refers to the areas and amenities which are provided for the use of more than one person.
The regulation also says that those responsible for multi-occupied residential buildings should provide residents with information on the importance of fire doors to a building’s safety. This change to the law was introduced following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
The Grenfell Tower fire in 2017 drew a great deal of attention to the importance of fire safety, having led to the deaths of 72 people.
